Where It All Began

In 1937, Mr. and Mrs. J. Finn Watson moved to Hobbs, New Mexico with their 5-year old son John, and purchased an interest in a gasoline distributorship. There were no paved streets and the town was rough and rowdy. They were advised to live in Lovington, the county seat, because Hobbs was not considered a suitable place to raise a family.

In 1943, Mr. Watson had the opportunity to purchase the International Truck and agriculture dealership from Maj. Harder. Mr. Watson’s uncle was the president of the bank in Artesia, New Mexico. He advised his nephew not to purchase the business since there was about $700 blue sky involved in the price. The local bank was unable to handle the transaction. Mr. and Mrs. Watson were turned down on their loan request at the El Paso National Bank. Mr. Watson secured the services of Mr. C.M. Burk, an accountant, to help put a package together to purchase the company. The couple went to Albuquerque where they received the money to purchase Watson Truck & Supply, Inc. (the Company). The original dealership consisted of three employees. Mr. E.W. Cox managed the parts department. Mr. Cox remained as a Watson employee and retired from the Company in 1986 after 43 years of service. The first automobile franchise received was Pontiac in 1944. The original purchase order for parts consisted of a letter for $500.00 of genuine Pontiac parts.

The business is dedicated to retail and commercial vehicles, oilfield supplies, rigs, parts, and service. Today the company is still family owned and operated and credits much of its success to it’s over 150 employees. As part of the Company’s success, it continues to be recognized among the top 100 privately held corporations in New Mexico.
